How to Rebuild Sleep After a Regression or Major Life Change

By Sam Rosenberg, Slumber Squad

Even the best sleepers can go through rough patches. A new sibling, a move, starting daycare, weaning, or even a family trip can shake things up. Add in developmental milestones, and suddenly bedtime feels like chaos again.

But here's the good news: rebuilding sleep doesn't mean starting over—it means reconnecting with the rhythm your child already knows.

Here's how to get back on track:

1. Start with the basics

When everything feels off, go back to the foundation:

  • Keep wake times and bedtimes predictable
  • Offer a calming, consistent bedtime routine
  • Limit sugar and screens before bed
  • Create a sleep space that's dark, quiet, and comforting

Even if you're co-sleeping or contact napping for now, those sleep cues still matter.

2. Be patient but proactive

If your child is going through a big change, some clinginess or sleep disruption is totally normal. It's okay to offer a little more support for a few nights—but set clear, loving boundaries. Sleep can be responsive and structured.

3. Use gradual transitions

If your child has been needing more help to fall asleep, start stepping back:

  • Sit closer to the crib/bed and slowly phase back
  • Reduce how much you're helping bit by bit
  • Use key phrases and emotional support while staying consistent

This helps rebuild independence without creating confusion.

4. Watch for readiness

Sometimes a regression is actually a sign your child is ready for change—like dropping a nap, moving bedtime, or weaning a feed. Their sleep needs evolve fast, and your plan should too.

5. Reach out if you feel stuck

If you've tried it all and sleep still feels like a battle, you're not alone. Whether your child is neurodivergent, adjusting to a new sibling, or has big feelings that are spilling into sleep—I offer thoughtful, personalized support to get your family sleeping again.
