What to Do When Sleep Training Stops Working

By Sam Rosenberg, Slumber Squad

You followed the plan. You stuck it out through the hard nights. And just when you thought you were finally getting consistent sleep—your child starts waking again. You're not alone.

Here's the truth: even successful sleep training doesn't mean perfect sleep forever. Illness, teething, developmental leaps, travel, or transitions (hello, daycare!) can all throw things off. That doesn't mean the work was wasted—it just means your child's needs have shifted, and your support strategy might need to shift too.

So what do you do when sleep training "stops working"?

1. Check for obvious disruptors

Before assuming it's behavioral, ask:

  • Is your child sick, teething, or overtired?
  • Has there been a recent change in routine, caregiver, or environment?
  • Is there separation anxiety peaking around 8–10 months, 18 months, or 2.5 years?

These are normal bumps in the road—and often temporary.

2. Revisit your routine

Babies and toddlers grow fast, and what worked a month ago might be too much or too little now. Ask:

Still not sure what's going on with your little one's sleep?

  • Are wake windows still age-appropriate?
  • Is bedtime too late or naps mistimed?
  • Has your child dropped a nap but still needs more support?

A few small adjustments can make a big difference.

3. Consistency is still key

Even if you're feeling unsure, keep your response consistent for at least 3–5 days before switching strategies. Your child thrives on predictability—especially when sleep feels disrupted.

4. Bring in support if you need it

Sometimes a fresh perspective is all it takes. If you've already done a sleep program and things feel off again, it doesn't mean you failed—it means it's time for a reset. I work with many families who've done previous training but need help troubleshooting regressions or making age-appropriate changes.

You don't need to start over—just shift the plan.

If you're ready to rebuild sleep, I'm here to help. Whether it's tweaking a routine, navigating toddler behavior, or resetting after a major change, we'll get things back on track—together.
