Breaking the Nurse to Sleep Cycle Before Fiji
The situation
Nora was approaching her first birthday, the third child in a busy family, and had exactly one way of falling asleep: nursing. Her mom had spent a week valiantly attempting to resettle her without the feed and getting nowhere, and there was a hard deadline on the horizon: a family trip to Fiji in three weeks. Oh, and every afternoon had a fixed 3:05 pm school pickup for the older kids, which is exactly when a baby this age would love to be napping.
What was actually going on
Nothing mysterious: a classic feed to sleep association doing exactly what those associations do at night. Nora surfaced between sleep cycles, noticed the milk was gone, and called for it to be restored. The resettling attempts had stalled because the bedtime association was still fully intact, and the way a baby falls asleep at bedtime is the way she expects to fall back asleep all night. The real design challenge was the calendar and the school run. A plan that ignored either would fail by Thursday.
The plan
Responsive settling with full in room presence, mom right beside the crib with her voice and her key phrase, warm and engaged the whole way, while Nora practiced the new skill. We separated nursing from sleep at bedtime and kept one deliberate keeper feed overnight, because our goal was breaking the association, not night weaning a baby who might still genuinely need one feed. The schedule was built around real life: naps placed so the school pickup stopped colliding with sleep, and the whole plan sequenced so the new skills would be solid before wheels up, with a dedicated travel section covering time zones so vacation would not undo the work.
The results
- Nora fell asleep without nursing on night 3
- Night wakings dropped to just the keeper feed within 4 nights
- She dropped the keeper feed on her own before the trip, when she showed she no longer needed it
- The family flew to Fiji with a baby who could fall asleep in a pack and play, and sleep survived the trip
"I never thought this was possible."
The takeaway
A sleep plan that ignores your actual life, the school runs, the trips, the siblings, is just a pretty PDF. The plan has to fit the family, or the family cannot follow the plan.
