False Start Bedtimes: Why Your Baby Wakes Shortly After Falling Asleep (And How to Fix It)

A false start happens when your baby falls asleep at bedtime and then wakes 20–45 minutes later — often wide awake. It feels like bedtime never really stuck.

Why false starts happen

• Overtiredness (the most common cause)
• Undertiredness
• Last wake window is too long or too short
• Strong sleep associations
• Sleep environment issues (light, temperature, noise)
• Developmental leaps or teething

How to fix false starts gently

1. Get the final wake window right (most babies 5–10 months do best with 3.5–4.25 hours).
2. Protect against overtiredness — an earlier bedtime often helps more than a later one.
3. Gradually reduce sleep associations while staying present and responsive.
4. Optimize the room: dark, cool (68–72°F), consistent white noise.
5. Respond the same way every time the false start happens.

When false starts are temporary

Occasional false starts during leaps, illness, or schedule changes are normal. If they happen most nights for more than a week, the schedule or sleep support usually needs attention.
