Postpartum Depression: My Story, the Signs, and How to Find Support
As a mother of two, I've experienced both the magic and the messiness that come with raising tiny humans. My son's birth brought NICU challenges I never expected. And when my daughter arrived, I faced something even more unexpected — and harder to talk about: postpartum depression.
This is my story, and I'm sharing it to help take the shame out of something so many of us go through.
What My Postpartum Depression Looked Like
After my daughter was born, I joined the 1 in 5 women who experience postpartum depression (PPD). It didn't show up all at once. At first, I was just… off. Exhausted in a way that sleep couldn't fix. Tearful every day. Distant. I loved my daughter deeply, but there was a disconnect I couldn't explain. It scared me.
I've had depression before — but this was different. It felt heavier. More confusing. And more invisible. I was showing up for my kids on the outside, but inside, I felt broken and numb.
The Quiet Weight of Postpartum Depression
PPD isn't just sadness. It's a tidal wave of emotion — and silence.
I felt:
- Guilt — Was I a bad mom?
- Shame — Why couldn't I just be happy?
- Fear — Would I feel this way forever?
- Isolation — No one else seemed to be going through this… was it just me?
If you're feeling this way too, please hear this: You're not the only one. You're not broken. And you're not to blame.
How to Recognize PPD
Postpartum depression can sneak in quietly. It can also feel completely overwhelming. Some signs include:
- Ongoing sadness, numbness, or hopelessness
- Intense anxiety, irritability, or mood swings
- Feeling disconnected from your baby
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Feeling like you're failing, even when you're doing everything you can
- Scary thoughts — about yourself or your child
- Withdrawing from your partner, friends, or family
You don't have to check every box to seek help. If something feels off — trust that instinct.

Healing didn't happen overnight. It took a mix of support, honesty, and slowly asking for help — even when it felt impossible.
Here's what helped me start the climb back:
- 🧠 Therapy: Talking to a therapist gave me a place to process the chaos in my mind. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) are commonly used and can really help.
- 💊 Medication: For some of us, postpartum depression isn't something we can will away. Antidepressants (prescribed and monitored by a doctor) helped stabilize my mood and made it possible to feel again.
- 👭 Support Groups: Hearing another mom say "me too" was powerful. Support groups reminded me I wasn't failing — I was human.
- 💛 Self-Care: This isn't bubble baths and lattes — it's basic needs. Moving my body. Eating food. Resting when I could. These small acts helped rebuild my strength.
- 🗣️ Talking About It: Opening up to my partner, friends, and eventually other moms brought relief I didn't know I needed. Saying it out loud takes courage. But it's worth it.
